TSA Bans Portable Chargers from Checked Luggage: What You Need to Know Before Your Next Flight

TSA has just made a major change to travel regulations, banning portable chargers and power banks with lithium batteries from checked luggage due to fire risks. The new rule affects most modern-day travel essentials, forcing passengers to carry these items in their carry-on bags instead.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued the updated guidance after several incidents where lithium-ion batteries in checked luggage posed a significant fire hazard. Now, only devices with installed batteries, such as laptops and cell phones, can be safely stored in checked bags, while spare batteries must be kept in the cabin.

In addition to the portable charger ban, there are several other items prohibited from checked luggage, including e-cigarettes, aerosols, and self-defense tools like pepper spray. Passengers are advised to double-check what they can bring on board to avoid delays at security.

Though the rules can feel overwhelming, the TSA’s guidelines and helpful tools like their “What Can I Bring?” feature make it easier for travelers to stay compliant and pack with confidence
